This week at Young At Heart ULO we had quite an eventful and fun-filled week…
On Monday morning, at St John’s Church, our session theme was ‘sounds’ so, after the usual welcome activities, we enjoyed a game of musical bingo. It was the first time the majority of the group had played musical bingo, so it took a little while to get into the swing of things. Once we got into the flow of the game, the group enjoyed singing along to the songs they were familiar with. After bingo, we played a new game, called ‘Soundiculous’, where individuals have to make sounds and the rest of the group have to guess that the sound represents, for example buzzing to represent bees.
On Monday afternoon we had our final session at East Avenue Community Centre, which was also our 2nd birthday party. The group enjoyed entertainment from the incredibly talented swing singer, Simon Carter, who serenaded the group with catchy tunes from yesteryear and had everyone singing along and up dancing! The group enjoyed cake and nibbles with their hot drinks throughout the session. It was a fabulous afternoon and a great way to end our time at East Avenue Community Centre. From next week, we will be meeting on Mondays from 1pm – 2:30pm at St Cuthberts Church Hall, which is also in Old Billingham, on Church Road.
On Tuesday afternoon, our group in Thornaby also had a sounds-themed session. This time we started with the ‘Soundiculous’ game, which didn’t go down so well as I think people weren’t quite settled in to the session. However, most people did contribute two sounds for the session and all sounds were guessed correctly. Afterwards, we played musical bingo and the group were very vocal and animated in singing along to the songs. Overall, it was a positive and interactive session and everyone left smiling.
On Wednesday afternoon, we had two events: afternoon tea with Vision25 CIC and our very first session at The Institute, Grays Road, Grangefield. Sadly, nobody attended the first session in Grangefield but the afternoon tea was well attended. Vision25 members gave the Young At Heart Group a lovely welcome and had prepared a delicious buffet of cakes and sandwiches, complemented by meaningful conversations. The lunch was followed by a musical sing-a-long, delivered by Apollo Arts, who sang songs from ‘The Greatest Showman’, Trolls’ and ‘Minions’, to name a few. We would like to thank our friends at Vision25 CIC for inviting us along to share the fun, excitement and food!
On Friday, in Ingleby Barwick, we had a good session talking about food and how tastes have changed over the years and completed a food-related quiz. As numbers remain low at this group, we have taken the decision to close this group. Our final session at Ingleby Barwick Community Centre will be on Friday 22nd March. However, in April we will be launching a new group at Egglescliffe Community Centre on Thursday afternoons from 1:15pm until 2:45pm.
