We had an interesting morning today at Young At Heart as we had 2 new people attend our group. It is always nice to see some fresh faces at the start of the week.
Our theme for today was ‘food’ and after much thought and multiple changes to the plan, I choose to have each table plan a different type of meal. The tasks set to the group were:
- You are planning a dinner party for 8 people, it will have 3 courses. What will you make? What ingredients will you need to buy? How much do you think it will cost?
- You are planning a small party buffet (you can decide how many people). What will you make? What ingredients will you need to buy? How much do you think it will cost?
- You are planning a romantic picnic for 2 people. What will you make? What ingredients will you need to buy? How much do you think it will cost?
- You are making a Sunday lunch. What will you make? What ingredients will you need to buy? How much do you think it will cost?
The group were really absorbed in this activity and we had some great responses. After everyone had finished their menu ideas we shared them with the rest of the group and asked for feedback on the menu that had been chosen. It was great to hear other people’s perspectives on the different meals on offer.
The group reported back that they had enjoyed the activity and that they also prefer being in the smaller groups for activities, but that trying to feed back to the whole group is difficult because people don’t always listen – this was the reason why we reduced the group size from 1 large group to up to 4 tables spread across the hall. Next time we will try the activity with an inflatable ball – only the person holding the ball should be speaking. This may not work, however, because some of our members have hearing impairments.
Next week we will be taking part in creative activities including short poems and paint by numbers, the results of which will be available on our Facebook page.
